String Day

Pairing pedagogy and artistry, String Day is a celebration of string instruments and the musicians behind them. The event is hosted annually by the Department of Music at SUNY New Paltz and seeks to provide students and the community unique access to noteworthy string musicians. Previous String Day guest artists include Silk Road Ensemble violinist Johnny Gandelsman and cellist Mike Block.

**POSTPONED**

Due to the potential for inclement weather on Saturday, March 3, the String Day 2023 events featuring Curtis Stewart on campus have been postponed.

We are working to reschedule these events. We will make an announcement on the Department of Music’s website and via e-mail when a new date is confirmed.

“This blazing violinist has made an indelible mark, shaking the cotton from its prison with gusts of innovation”
-Tyran Grillo, All About Jazz

“He shows his audience the colors inside of himself—color(s) not yet invented. Far from self-indulgent, it is self-revelatory. It is vulnerable. It is creation.”
-Travis Rodgers, JazzTimes

Three time GRAMMY nominated violinist/composer Curtis Stewart spends the day on campus as this year's String Day guest artist!
On Saturday, March 4, Stewart will conduct a workshop for high school and college students in the intimate Shepard Recital Hall on campus at 11:00 a.m. He will then capstone his visit with a public solo performance at 2:00 p.m. in Studley Theatre.
Stewart is a violinist in the PUBLIQuartet, and teaches at Alfred University and LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. He was a double Engineering and Violin major at Eastman School of Music/Univeristy of Rochester. He plays jazz and contemporary music, composes, speaks/sings/electronically modifies music in addition to his violin playing, and has a solo album coming out in June 2023. Stewart's music features underrepresented people, "exploring the human psychology and meaning of abstract color via the psychology of skin pigment."
