Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
  • The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures fulfills an integral role in the New Paltz mission and general education requirements. The department advances proficiency in foreign languages and multicultural awareness in an increasingly global society.
  • The department teaches nearly 3,500 students annually in nine languages, and also collaborates with several other departments to offer interdisciplinary courses in subjects such as Asian studies and women’s studies. Most department faculty members are native speakers of the languages they teach.
  • In conjunction with the Center for International Programs, the department offers overseas academic programs in Ecuador, France, Italy, Japan, and Spain. Students report their study abroad experiences to be some of the most enriching experiences of their lives.
  • The department plays a pivotal role in providing students with communication skills and essential knowledge to function as global citizens. Languages, Literatures, and Cultures majors go on to serve in a variety of industries such as business, education, and government.
  • The department adheres to guidelines established by professional organizations such as the Modern Language Association of America and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, among others.
