January 2022: Event Recaps: Sound Your Truth

Sound Your Truth event strengthens underrepresented voices

The Sound Your Truth event, an interactive evening of creative sharing and collective expression, was held on Oct. 14, 2021.

Sound Your Truth, which took place on the Sojourner Truth Library quad/courtyard, was hosted and coordinated by Eddy at New Paltz in collaboration with the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, the Department of Black Studies, Black Lives Matter @ School @ New Paltz, the Faculty Development Center, and Sojourner Truth Library.

The organizers—including Fine & Performing Arts faculty Andrea Frank, Emily Puthoff, Joshua Korenblat, Aurora DeArmendi, Jill Parisi-Phillips, and Michael Asbill—intended to particularly amplify and center underrepresented voices. The collaboration process, deep listening and sharing, and connecting that took place felt truly transformational.

The event was documented by adjunct lecturer Robert Harris and his students (see video coverage above).

Organizers plan to hold this event annually on October 14, George Floyd’s birthday.
