The Peter A. Krueger Summer Internship Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain professional skills and learn about museum practices at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Interns will acquire in-depth knowledge and develop an enriched understanding of how the museum fulfills its mission to educate, inspire, and empower people through design.

Explore the 2024 Peter A. Krueger Internship offerings below. Internships will be hybrid, and interns will be required to work onsite at Cooper Hewitt located in New York City a minimum of three (3) days a week. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the time of application. Required application materials: resume, responses to three prompts, two references, and transcript.

Stipend: $5,000

Internships

Work with MoMA curators and educators and gain experience in the museum field.

• Learn about our mission, collections, and organizational systems
• Gain practical and theoretical training in museum work
• Contemplate the role of museums in contemporary society
• Work closely with a member of the MoMA staff
• Attend curator talks and a weekly lecture series

Full-time, seven-month internships with stipends are offered at MoMA for recent graduates of bachelor’s or master’s degree programs interested in pursuing or exploring a museum career. Interns will be provided focused departmental training, complemented with regular activities designed for this cohort to receive greater exposure to the museum and art fields. At this time, interns are expected to begin the program on a rotational basis between onsite and remote work. The Museum will evaluate this periodically according to internal health and safety guidelines.

Internships provide training in specific museum fields through close work with a professional staff member, familiarity with modern and contemporary art through seminars and discussions, and an educational program that exposes interns to the workings of the Museum as a whole, while considering the role of museums in the broader cultural context.

MoMA PS1 Internship Program

MoMA PS1 offers blended internships with onsite and remote opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and beginning professionals with practical experience in a specific area of museum work. Our internship program provides the opportunity to learn about the operations of a non-profit art institution and work alongside some of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists and curators. In addition to departmental work interns participate in weekly professional development activities designed to increase understanding of the Museum’s various programs, exhibitions, and departments.

Full-time summer internships are available in a range of departments, including curatorial, collections, marketing, education, archives, and others.

About SMI's Internship Program

The Studio Museum's internship program offers college undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduate Interns the opportunity to collaborate on meaningful and engaging projects with Museum staff and participate in a series of meetings and workshops focused on contemporary museology.

Interns are placed in departments across the Museum where they work with professional staff, assist on internal and external projects, and learn about the Museum's permanent collection and Artist-in-Residence program. Interns gain valuable work experience as well as the opportunity to develop connections with other museum professionals. 

• Dates: Summer 2024 Dates: June 3, 2024 – August 9, 2024 (10-weeks)
• Application Deadline: 11:59 PM on March 11, 2024
• Requirements: Minimum 15 hours/week, during the workweek (M-F); interns are also required to work in-person one day a week in our offices in Harlem.
• Stipend: $2250

Applicants are encouraged to designate both a first and second choice for the positions they wish to be considered for.

Applicants will be notified about interviews by April 8, 2024. If you have not heard back before that date, you have not been considered as a finalist for the Summer 2024 cohort.

All interns must attend an in-person orientation day the morning of June 3, 2024, to commence their program.

While this internship follows a hybrid model, all interns must be able to work in-person on Wednesdays. This day is designated for enrichment activities and field trips around the city. Additionally, it provides interns with a valuable opportunity to build relationships with each other.
