Duties: The State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY) seeks applications for the role of Deputy Chief of Police in the University Police Department. Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

• Assumes duties of second-in-command of The University Police Department (UPD), serving as Acting Chief in the absence of the Chief of Police
• Schedules hours of duty for University Police personnel
• Oversees the activities of administrative personnel in the UPD
• Assists in the development and presentation of police/security training programs on campus in conjunction with the SUNY System Administration office of Coordinator of University Police and Security
• Prepares performance ratings for UPD personnel
• Assists the Chief of Police in providing liaison with outside law enforcement agencies, as well as with the Office of Student Affairs on campus
• Reports any instances of misconduct on the part of university police employees
• Assists in developing a program for campus security and safety
• Accurately gathers, prepares and reports statistical information to both federal and state agencies in compliance with the Clery Act, Incident Based Reporting (IBR) reporting standards and other mandated reporting requirements

Qualifications: Required:
• Associates Degree or a minimum of 60 college hours
• Minimum of 7-10 years full time experience in law enforcement
• Minimum of 3-5 years of law enforcement experience at the rank above Police Officer
• Certified with New York State Division of Criminal Justice and Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) as a Police Officer
• Valid New York State Driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle
• Must currently, or have plans to within the first year of appointment, reside no more than 75 minutes from campus for emergency response circumstances

Preferred:
• Experience as a liaison of a law enforcement agency to community groups
• At least 5 years of experience working in law enforcement in a college or university setting
• Strong background and knowledge of the principles of Community Policing
• Training in mediation and/or problem solving
• Budgetary experience
• Training in National Incident Management System (NIMS) and emergency response coordination
• Working knowledge of supervisory and administrative practices and procedures
• Experience with the Clery Act and Title IX
• Familiarization with the Department of Criminal Justice System (DCJS) accreditation process
• Police instructor status or eligible for same
