Duties: The Department of Art History at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz invites applications for a tenure-track position in Asian art at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin August 2024. SUNY New Paltz has offered the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History since 1964. The Department of Art History is dedicated to the teaching of undergraduates and to providing students with a broad and varied understanding of world art traditions. The Department, which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and housed in the School of Fine & Performing Arts at SUNY New Paltz, offers the Art History major, minor, and concentration within the Elementary Education Pre-K-6 curriculum.

The Department welcomes applicants in all areas of specialization, including interregional approaches, but the preferred candidate will be capable of teaching the histories of East Asian traditions. We encourage applications from individuals who will bring diverse cultural and ethnic perspectives and experiences to our campus, who can advise and mentor students from diverse backgrounds, and who are committed to fostering an inclusive atmosphere. We especially welcome candidates who will foster connections to other departments and programs on campus, particularly Asian Studies, because Asian art history courses satisfy requirements of this interdisciplinary major and minor.

Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
• Teach upper - and lower - division courses in Asian art
• Conduct scholarly activity appropriate to the position (as demonstrated by ongoing research, publications, and presentations at relevant conferences)
• Participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on departmental and campus-wide committees
• The teaching load is three courses per semester

Qualifications: Required:
• Ph.D. in art history or a closely related discipline by the start of the appointment
• Knowledge and ability to teach college-level courses in Asian art history, including survey courses

Preferred:
• College/university teaching experience beyond T.A. level
• Demonstrated scholarly ability in the form of publications in candidate's area of expertise
