Duties: The Campus Engineer position is a salaried, professional position that will be filled by a licensed engineer (NYS preferred and/or eligible) with substantial mechanical engineering experience in HVAC design and facilities systems. They will work with in-house architects and project managers, energy/sustainability staff, facilities operations staff, and outside consultant teams on the planning, design, and construction of campus projects.
Design Support - The Campus Engineer will be required to develop designs and construction documents for assigned in-house projects and follow with construction administration. They will work closely with outside design professionals reviewing and providing input for capital building project designs (for Campus Let, State University Construction Fund-managed and Dormitory Authority of the State of New York-managed projects). Primary goals for this effort are to provide the best possible design, within budget, while mitigating potential problems, and minimizing the negative impacts of construction on campus operations. Meeting state mandated energy goals is paramount to all upcoming design projects.
Assessment & Planning – The Campus Engineer will collaborate with Facilities Operations staff and Energy/Sustainability staff to assess existing building systems for condition and operational efficiencies, energy savings, controls strategies, and tactics for achieving mandated carbon neutrality goals. The Campus Engineer will use these assessments to help plan projects for upgrades and replacements to existing systems.
Other aspects of the job include:
Knowledge of, and designing to, NYS Building Codes
Representing Facilities Management when meeting with clients / customers and other members of the design team to identify and hone scopes of work
Preparing preliminary scopes of work and cost estimates for in-house project requests from campus clients
Design development, and production of construction documents and written specifications, for in-house HVAC and controls systems projects
Construction Administration of in-house design scopes under construction, including attending job meetings
Understanding and application of holistic building energy conservation strategies including building envelope concepts, controls sequencing and occupant comfort
Represent campus standards, and answer campus-specific questions, in support of mechanical portions of design, and construction, for capital projects
Participate in energy reduction/decarbonization initiatives such as: SUNY New Paltz Carbon Neutrality Task Force, Energy Master Plan, District Heat Pump Feasibility Study and State University Construction Fund Directive 1B-2: Net Zero Carbon New Construction and Deep Energy Retrofit projects
Evaluate and integrate NYSERDA and Central Hudson (local utility corporation) incentives for energy conservation measures and consulting services in support of design and construction projects, and operational improvements
Analyze building-level electrical and thermal energy usage data
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field is required
Professional license, PE (or Architecture) required / PE in mechanical engineering preferred
Minimum four (4) years of experience as a PE / in mechanical/HVAC engineering design preferred
Experience designing, studying or analyzing central utility plant infrastructure preferred
Experience on college, hospital or industrial campus, or other large facilities campus is preferred
Experience with electrification of HVAC systems and/or central plants is preferred
AutoCAD 2018, or later version software proficiency required / Revit proficiency preferred
Technical knowledge of design and construction industry standards required
Ability to comprehend construction drawings and specifications and prepare pertinent review comments required
MS Word and Excel proficiency preferred
Working knowledge of NYS Building Code preferred

Strong organizational skills
Estimating and project scheduling software experience
Experience in building renovation designs
Specification writing experience
LEED AP certification
