Summer Camps

Led by the region's finest teachers, the Hudson Valley Writing Project offers children and teens unique learning experiences at local cultural and historic sites, nature preserves, and college campuses.



AGES 7-9

WONDROUS WRITERS
SUNY New Paltz

Curiosity is the best inspiration for writing. We will celebrate children's capacity for wonder, exploring many questions as we write, make art, and explore favorite places on the college campus.

WRITE ON THE FARM
Poughkeepsie Farm Project

Join us as we explore a community farm together! Hands-on experiences will inspire our writing and creativity as we grow, harvest, cook, and eat delicious, farm-fresh food.

EVERYONE IS A WRITER**

Imaginations soar in this unique camp where we will learn to think like writers, experimenting with many kinds of writing and gathering inspiration from creating art, playing games, and reading children's books.

CREATING COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS**

Who doesn't love a story with pictures? We will explore comics, graphic novels, and more as we develop our own characters, write dialogue, and illustrate our original stories to create exciting, new graphic texts.

WRITING FOR FUN

Exciting writing prompts, art activities, and inspiring visits to the campus art museum and planetarium will spark our creativity as we learn about the craft of writing and how to revise and refine our work.

BECOMING AUTHORS & ARTISTS

STEP BACK IN TIME
Museum Village, Monroe

At this unique open-air museum, we will learn about 19th century engineering and crafts - woodworking, candle making, blacksmithing, weaving - using hands-on games and activities to inspire our drawing and writing.

In one adventurous week, we will tour historic stone houses, explore a wildlife sanctuary, and spend time on a working farm as we learn and write about the remarkably rich history of this land and its people. 

AGES 12-14

FROM PLAYWRITING TO PERFORMANCE

In this playwriting lab, we will bring writing from the page to the stage. We'll work together to create characters, craft exciting scenes, and finally bring our words to life in our very own production.

AGES 12-16

UNTOLD STORIES & UNHEARD VOICES 
Washington Irving's Sunnyside, Tarrytown

Tours of the magnificent house and grounds of celebrated writer Washington Irving will inspire our own writing, as we explore Irving's life and legacy, as well as the untold stories of his family and the staff at Sunnyside.

COURAGEOUS WRITERS
Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Historic Sites, Hyde Park

We will write about and explore the power of Eleanor and FDR's legacy as we hike beautiful parklands, visit FDR's family home, Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-kill, the Presidential Library, and the Vanderbilt Estate.

AGES 13-17

TEEN WRITERS INSTITUTE

Vassar College: July 30-Aug 3  |  9 a.m.-1 p.m.  |  $275 
Working in a creative workshop setting, we will
tell our stories through personal essays, fiction, and poetry. We'll share ideas and respond to each other's work as we polish our writing for an anthology.

RISE UP & WRITE
SUNY New Paltz

This is the time for teens to advocate for a more just world. We will explore important issues, learning to research, write, and speak as agents of change as we develop our individual and collective definitions of social justice.

WRITING THE COLLEGE ESSAY
SUNY New Paltz: July 9-13  |  9 a.m.-1 p.m.  |  $275
A good college essay communicates who you are and what you believe. Together we will study essays that work, brainstorm topics, and organize our ideas as we write in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Refund Policy: For cancellations made prior to May 15, a partial refund will be made (tuition cost minus a $75 processing fee). After May 15, no refunds will be given.
