Led by the region's finest teachers, the Hudson Valley Writing Project offers children and teens unique writing and learning experiences at local cultural and historic sites, nature preserves, and college campuses.

AGES 6-7

TELLING OUR STORIES

Our imaginations will soar as we play together, make new friends, and tell our stories through drawing, writing, painting, clay, movement, and make believe. 

AGES 8-9

WONDROUS WRITERS 
SUNY New Paltz 
July 6-10 | 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. | $275  
Curiosity is the best inspiration for writing! Together, we will explore all sorts of questions as we write, make art, and discover our favorite places on the college campus. 

WE ARE WRITERS 
Huguenot Street, New Paltz 
July 13-17 | 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. | $225 
We will learn to think like writers and experiment with many kinds of writing, finding inspiration in what we see around us as we explore Huguenot Street and cross a bridge to a magical nature sanctuary. 

NATURE WRITERS & EXPLORERS 
Environmental Cooperative at Vassar Barns 
July 27-31 | 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. | $225 
Join us as we explore pond, stream, forest and meadow habitats and write in and about nature. We’ll learn about local plants and animals and how we can create environments that support the needs of all living things. 

AGES 10-12 

WRITING FOR FUN

Exciting writing prompts, art activities, and inspiring visits to the campus art museum and planetarium will spark our creativity as we learn about and practice the craft of writing. 

CREATING COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS

Who doesn't love a story with pictures? We will explore comics, graphic novels, and more as we develop our own characters, write dialogue, and illustrate our original stories to create exciting new texts. 

AGES 10-14 

STEP BACK IN TIME 
Museum Village, Monroe 
July 6-10 | 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. | $225 
At this unique open-air museum, we will learn about 19th century engineering and crafts - woodworking, candle making, blacksmithing, weaving - using hands-on games and activities to inspire our drawing and writing. 

BECOMING AUTHORS & ARTISTS 
Storm King Art Center, New Windsor 
July 20-24 | 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. | $295 
This world-famous sculpture park is the perfect setting to write, learn about and make art, while exploring the park's rolling hills, fields, meadows, and woodlands.

Discover your creativity and your voice as a writer as we travel between the past and the present, exploring colonial-era stone houses and artifacts, a working community farm, and a magical wildlife sanctuary.

WRITING SCI-FI & FANTASY

Immerse yourself in a world of your own creation! Let your imagination loose and create a world in writing and art by developing characters, mapping out the places they live, and dreaming up an adventurous plot. 

WRITING & ROLE-PLAYING, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS 
SUNY New Paltz 
July 13-17 | 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. | $295 
Together we will create characters and write mythic stories, replete with magic and monsters, heroes and villains, then role the D&D dice and let the adventures (and the battling) begin! 

AGES 12-16 

RISE UP & WRITE

Do you want to advocate for a better world? Working together, we will explore issues of social justice that are important to us and learn about ways to write and speak as agents of change. 

COURAGEOUS WRITERS 
Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites, Hyde Park 
July 20-24 | 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. | $225 
We will write and explore the power of history to inform the future as we hike beautiful parklands, visit FDR's Presidential Library, his family home, the Vanderbilt estate, and Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-kill. 

AGES 13-17 

WRITING THE COLLEGE ESSAY

A good college essay communicates who you are and what you believe. We will study essays that work, brainstorm topics, and transform our ideas into solid drafts, as we give and receive feedback in a relaxed, supportive setting. For rising juniors and seniors

TEEN WRITERS INSTITUTE

Working in a creative workshop setting, we will tell our stories through personal essays, fiction, and poetry. We'll share ideas and respond to each other's work as we polish our writing for an anthology.
