Special Alert to All Students – Mumps outbreak
There has been a large, nation-wide mumps outbreak affecting mainly college-age students 18 – 24 years old with about 2,500 cases reported since December 2005. To be adequately protected against contracting mumps infection, which can cause serious illness, all students should have documentation that they have received two doses of MMR. Students who have had only one MMR and one dose of measles vaccine should receive a second MMR vaccine. Students can receive second MMR vaccinations from their personal health care provider or their county’s health department. The Student Health Service also holds clinics to administer MMR vaccinations to students. All students need to submit proof of receiving two MMR vaccines to the Student Health Service, prior to the beginning of fall, 2006 classes.

Eligibility for Services:
In order to be eligible to use the Student Health Center, students must be registered for classes and have submitted a properly completed Pre-Enrollment Health Report before the beginning of the current semester or session. Continued eligibility for care depends upon student compliance with appointments and other aspects of care and treatment, as well as student comportment (behavior).
Location:
The Student Health Center has relocated to the round building across from Gage Hall. The building houses both the Student Health Center and the Psychological Counseling Center, which are separate services.
Telephone Number: 257-3400
Hours of Operation:
The Student Health Center is open weekdays 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. while the University is in session. The telephone is answered between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If all lines are busy, there is a voice message directing callers to contact University Police or to dial 911 for emergencies.
For emergencies, please dial 911. This will allow students in need to receive immediate medical attention.
After Hours:
For emergencies, dial 911.
For routine matters such as scheduling appointments for non-urgent, non-emergency reasons, students need to callduring our regular office hours.
If a student has an urgent medical problem that they feel cannot wait for our regular office hours, and they are not sure how to proceed, they may reach the on-call physician by calling 3400 and following the recorded instructions. This service is not for emergencies - call 911 for emergencies.
The on-call physician is available to discuss urgent medical questions with students by telephone, to help the student caller identify his or her options for care.
Scope of Practice:
The Center's staff assist in providing for general health care needs of registered students while the college is in regular session. Students are cared for in conjunction with their personal physicians/providers. The student's personal health care provider is considered to be the individual who completes the Pre-Enrollment Health Report.
We provide primary medical care for students who have submitted a properly completed Pre-Enrollment Health Report when they are enrolled in the College. Therefore, the care we provide is interim primary health care. University Health Services does not provide comprehensive health care for students, and as such we cannot completely substitute for a student's primary health care physician/provider.
Some students, because of the nature of their problems, will be asked to secure an off-campus health care provider in the area while they are attending the College following initial evaluation/care at the Student Health Center.
Students who require specialty physician care will be assisted by the Student Health Center Staff in accessing this care through their primary care medical provider and their insurance plan.
Transportation to/from off-campus medical facilities:
The Health Center does not provide transportation to/from off-campus medical facilities. The Health Center will, when indicated activate the emergency 911 system, to transport a student to an emergency room. The College has a taxi voucher system operated by the CAS office, which can be utilized to obtain transportation to/from off-campus private medical offices and for trips to an emergency room notrequiring an ambulance. Vouchers are available from the Health Center, Campus Police, and Residence Life.
