Daniel Leader is the founder and CEO of Bread Alone Bakery. He opened the original bakery in Boiceville, N.Y. in 1983 and since then has added two bakery cafes in Woodstock and Rhinebeck, N.Y. In 2012, Mr. Leader secured a $4.6 million loan from the United States Department of Agriculture to create a new bakery in Lake Katrine, N.Y. Opened in 2013, the new 26,000 square-foot facility is now the headquarters for Bread Alone and provides much of the product the company supplies to retail stores from New York City to Albany, N.Y. Mr. Leader was named one of Dessert Professional’s Top Ten Bread Bakers in America in 2010. He is the author of four books: Bread Alone: Bold Fresh; Local Breads; Panini Express; and Simply Great Breads: Sweet and Savory Yeasted Treats from America’s Premier Artisan Baker. He is currently working on a fifth, to be published in 2019 with Penguin, titled Living Bread. Mr. Leader sits on the Institute of Culinary Education’s pastry and baking arts advisory council, and is also a member of the Society of Fellows at the Culinary Institute of America. He established community-based micro-bakeries to help satisfy the dietary needs of malnourished adults and children in South Africa, and continues to work there with 2017 CNN Hero Rosie Mashale. The programs he works on are also designed to encourage income generation opportunities for South Africans living with HIV/AIDS.
Mr. Leader graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1976. He lives in Shady, N.Y.
