Request a 3-minute announcement to advertise CSS services. Announcements can include general CSS services or information about our Peer Coaching, Writing Studio or Subject Tutoring/Supplemental Instruction for classes that have these services. Our Coordinator or Graduate Assistant will check in at the beginning of class and then provide information to students. To request an announcement, please fill out the form here.

Request a 10-minute mini in-class workshop to review CSS services, a specific CSS service (you can choose from Writing Studio, Academic Coaching or Tutoring/Supplemental Instruction), or a mini workshop on time management or study skills. Center for Student Success: SUNY New Paltz students from all majors have access to academic services provided in the Center for Student Success. These services include subject tutoring in historically challenging courses, writing support for any academic writing assignment, academic coaching, and online tutoring. Trained student leaders provide all services in the Center. Visit www.newpaltz.edu/studentsuccess for more information or my.newpaltz.edu/css to make an appointment. Writing Studio: SUNY New Paltz students from all majors have access to the Writing Studio at the Center for Student Success. The Writing Studio is available for students working on any writing assignment from any class at any stage in the writing process, from brainstorming to revision. Visit www.newpaltz.edu/stucentsuccess for more information or my.newpaltz.edu/css to make an appointment. The CSS is located in Old Main, B106.

Subject Tutoring: SUNY New Paltz students enrolled in this course have subject tutoring available at the Center for Student Success. Starting the second week of classes, free small group subject tutoring is available by going to my.newpaltz.edu/css and making an appointment. CSS tutoring is led by trained peers that have already done well in the course and received in-depth training. Students are encouraged to come with questions or concepts they would like to review. The CSS is located in Old Main, B106.

Supplemental Instruction: SUNY New Paltz students enrolled in this course have Supplemental Instruction available at the Center for Student Success. This free group tutoring service helps students with course content while also preparing for exams, working together as a group and learning study skills to be successful throughout the semester. Sessions are led by a Supplemental Instruction Leader, who has already done well in the course, has received in-depth training, and is sitting in the class along with students to stay up to date on material. Peer Academic Coaching Sessions: All SUNY New Paltz students have access to Peer Coaching sessions located in the CSS. Students that would like assistance with time management, study skills, test preparation, or other academic resources can go to my.newpaltz.edu/css to make an appointment. Sessions are facilitated by upper-level student peers that have received thorough training. Sessions are located in the CSS in Old Main, B106.

Faculty Referrals

Each semester, job applications open for students for the following semester in courses where tutors have graduated or can no longer continue tutoring. Each position requires at least one faculty reference in order to be considered for a position. Applicants are asked to send faculty the faculty reference form to refer a student.

Would you like to suggest a student tutor for next semester? Please email our Director to suggest any recommendations. The Director will reach out directly to the student(s).

Certifications and Accreditation

The Center for Student Success holds certification through the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA). CRLA certification helps our center adhere to national standards related to tutoring pedagogy and techniques, data collection and analysis and provides mentoring for our program. Similarly, our Supplemental Instruction program adheres to the International Center for Supplemental Instruction certification standards (ICSI).

Data

In the 2022-23 year, the following notes were taken from the Center for Student Success annual report:

  • Nationally, students that attended supplemental instruction sessions (group tutoring) regularly, as defined by at least three sessions, had an average of a 13% increase in their final grade in the class compared to non-attendees.
  • After surveying student attendees, 96% of attendees felt like their tutor was friendly and encouraging and 92% said that what they learned at the CSS aided their learning in the class.
