ModMath

Most people have heard of Dyslexia; a learning disability that affects reading and writing, but have you ever heard of Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, and Dyspraxia? Children with these difficulties often struggle to solve math problems with traditional paper and pencil. If you can’t write a math problem, you can’t solve a math problem. This was a pain point felt throughout the community of parents desperately trying to help their math-disabled student complete basic math problems.
ModMath is assistive technology to assist students with math disabilities. ModMath is the first iPad app that allows differently-abled students to solve math problems! ModMath makes virtual graph paper specifically designed to allow students with math disabilities to organize their thoughts in a legible form. ModMath is available for free download in the Apple App Store or users can purchase ModMath Pro for $4.99 to enjoy the latest updates for the application. By purchasing the pro version, ModMath can invest that revenue back into the business to make the free application better for everyone!
ModMath was born out of the cries of parents desperate to see their children succeed in math classes without being able to write legibly. The first version of ModMath was put out on the market in 2016 to the delight of the special education community. Since the first launch, Mod Math has received praise from parents and users belting sentiments such as “I wish I had found this 5 years ago” and “This should be used in every classroom!” With very little marketing, Mod Math has been able to attract 20,000 users through word of mouth and people organically finding the application out of pure necessity.
ModMath is part of a larger mission to make schooling more accessible for students living with learning disabilities. Due to this critical mission, ModMath has received widespread support and mentorship from the community. ModMath came to the Hudson Valley Venture Hub in January
of this year where we have been able to connect them with people and resources to propel their business while keeping true to their mission.
While ModMath has achieved great milestones since launching the application in 2016, there are many more accomplishments ModMath is working towards. First, ModMath is conducting marketing research to understand the demands of consumers in the special education space. They are working to collect feedback from users, administrators, and teachers on how to make this application an even more powerful tool for students with learning disabilities. Second, Mod Math is working towards making this application available on Chromebooks that are being used in most classrooms over iPads. Additionally, ModMath is working to add more features to the application such as integration with Google Classroom and more accessible design and branding consistent with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards.
Join us on this journey and support Modmath by talking about it with parents, educators, and students who you think might benefit from it!
