Duties: The Department of Black Studies at the State University of New York at New Paltz invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) of Black Studies with a specialization in African History/African studies and a subspecialty in Black/African American Studies. Appointment begins in fall 2018. The primary responsibility will be to teach courses within the department’s historical core, including courses such as Introduction to Africa, Pre-Colonial Africa, Contemporary Africa, Introduction to Black Studies, courses on Race and Racism, and Senior Seminar. The teaching load is typically three courses per semester. The successful candidate will also be expected to demonstrate and maintain a strong scholarly agenda, to advise students, and to contribute to the life and work of the department and the college.
Qualifications: • Ph.D. in History or Black Studies or another relevant field. Exceptional ABD candidates with a firm completion date will be considered.
• Post- secondary teaching experience highly desired.
• Experience mentoring and/or advising students with diverse backgrounds is a plus.
