Daniel Leader

Daniel Leader is the founder and CEO of Bread Alone Bakery. He opened the original bakery in Boiceville, New York in 1983 and since then has added two bakery cafes in 2022Woodstock, New York and Rhinebeck, New York. In 2012, Mr. Leader secured a $4.6 million loan from the United States Department of Agriculture to create a new bakery in Lake Katrine, New York. Opened in 2013, the new 26,000 square-foot facility is now the headquarters for Bread Alone and provides much of the product the company supplies to retail stores from New York City to Albany, New York.

Mr. Leader has consulted with some of the leading supermarkets in the world including Wegman's, Fairway, H.E.B., and Pick'nPay in South Africa. He was named one of Dessert Professional's Top Ten Bread Bakers in America. His book, Living Bread: Tradition and Innovation in Artisan Bread Making won the James Beard Award for Baking and Dessert. He has also authored four other books; Bread Alone: Bold Fresh; Local Breads; Panini Express; and Simply Great Breads: Sweet and Savory Yeasted Treats from America's Premier Artisan Baker. He currently sits on the Institute of Culinary Education's Pastry & Baking Arts Advisory Council and co-founded The South African Grain Bread Project which established community-based, micro-bakeries to help satisfy the dietary needs of malnourished adults and children. Mr. Leader graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1976 and currently resides in Shady, New York.
