Katie Geneva Cannon Fund for Contingent Faculty
Application Information
The Katie Geneva Cannon Fund encourages and supports the research and/or creative activities of SUNY New Paltz contingent faculty through project-based funding. The fund is named in honor of the late Rev. Dr. Katie Geneva Cannon, a pioneering scholar and educator whose life's work embodied the principles of justice, liberation, and empowerment. This fund recognizes that the intellectual vitality of our institution depends on nurturing the potential of all our faculty members, particularly those who bring diverse perspectives and experiences to our academic community. Contingent faculty play a critical role, and SUNY New Paltz is committed to investing in you and continuing to seek ways of supporting you going forward.
While there is no fixed amount of funds to be awarded in each cycle, proposals may be made for up to $4,500 ($9,000 for grants with at least two New Paltz contingent faculty). While the projects may not have a definitive end date (e.g., a multi-year book project, an academic degree), the award should be used within one year of receipt of funding, and the awardee should submit a brief report of results with one month of completion.
Applications may be submitted by individuals or groups. Proposals for initiating new projects or completing work on an existing project will both be considered. Reimbursement for work completed in the previous six months will be considered, though priority will be given to proposals scheduled to take place in the upcoming year. Preference will be given to new applicants, although faculty may apply multiple times, with a limit of once per semester.

Applicants should have taught at least two semesters out of the previous two calendar years (i.e., two fall or spring semesters out of the previous four semesters). Faculty are eligible for the award even if they are not employed continuously during the award period.
Items eligible for funding include publication costs, equipment1, costs associated with the production of a creative endeavor, supplies, laboratory/analysis/ processing fees, research-related travel, exhibition fees, tuition, workshop and conference fees, costs associated with coursework toward completion of a degree, consultants (transcribers, exhibition installers, etc.), course release, faculty stipend2.
An application consists of the following:
- Project description (limit two 12-point, single-spaced pages)
- Deliverables or expected outcomes;
- Statement on how the award will affect and enhance the recipient’s career;
- Project Budget: Please prioritize budget line items in case of partial funding;
- Timeline for project completion and funding

Proposals for the initial round of applications are due at 12:59 pm on June 1, 2025. Projected application due dates for future rounds of proposals are November 1 and April 1. Completed applications should be submitted electronically as a single document (.docx or .pdf) to Tara Dates (datest@newpaltz.edu). The committee (consisting of contingent faculty and representatives from the Office of the Provost) will review the proposals and make recommendations to the Provost; recipients will be notified within 45 days of the submission deadline.
Within one month of the completion of the project, recipients will be expected to submit to Tara Dates (datest@newpaltz.edu) a brief written report of results and impact.
