SUNY New Paltz's clinically rich 15-credit Intensive Teacher Institute in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is designed for NYS Professionally certified teachers who have an interest in working with multilingual learners. CURRICULUM

SED 573: Teaching English as a New Language I
SED 576: Teaching English as a New Language II
SED 577: Applied Linguistics for Teachers of English as a New Language
SED 580: English Grammar for Teachers of English as a New Language
SED 575: Teaching Literacy in English as a New Language


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Evidence of NYS professional teacher certification in any subject area
  • One set of official transcripts from ALL undergraduate and graduate coursework from an accredited institution(s) with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale
  • Letter from current employer verifying employment in a NYS school district and assuring that they are willing to help you meet your needs in the district One current letter of recommendation Application essay explaining the candidate's interest in working with learners of English as a new language Commitment to attending orientation and all in-person class meetings These requirements may be completed before or during the CR-ITI Program Twelve credit hours of college level coursework in a language other than English Achieve a passing score on NYS Teacher Certification Examination: Content Specialty Test (CST) -- English for Speakers of Other Languages Evidence of successful completion of NYS mandated workshops Recognition and Reporting of Child Abuse Prevention of School Violence Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Health and Safety

These requirements may be completed before or during the CR-ITI Program

  • Twelve credit hours of college level coursework in a language other than English or equivalent College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credits
  • Achieve a passing score on NYS Teacher Certification Examination: Content Specialty Test (CST) -- English for Speakers of Other Languages
  • Evidence of successful completion of NYS mandated workshops
