A Taste of the Past: Taking a Culinary Journey to Ancient Greece & Rome
One of the best ways to understand a culture is to experience its food, and ancient civilizations are no exception to this principle. This talk explores how we learn about what, where, and how people ate in antiquity based on literary and archaeological evidence as well as the culinary adventures that Honors students in Professor Heuer's spring 2023 seminar experienced while throwing an authentic Roman convivium.

Zine Making Workshop
Make a Mini-Zine workshop! Zines are a great way to share an idea, a poem, a message, a story, your feelings, or even some simple artwork. In this hands-on session we will make a 2.5" x 4" zine to introduce a fun, simple format that anyone can do in a short amount of time. Bring thoughts or images from the Tree Walk, a Haiku you wrote, reminiscences about the Honors program and New Paltz, or any other thoughts or inspiration. It doesn't have to be original - you can use your favorite song lyrics or a quote you love. Using basic collage techniques and a few drawing prompts, Professor Varga will lead you through making a mini-zine that we will copy and share with the group! Everyone will leave with a stack of mini-zines to smile, laugh, ponder and talk about. All supplies will be provided!

He’ll be speaking about his work with students in this capacity over the years, including various success stories. Also, two current honors students (Lucas Hoyt and Julia Lombard) and two honors alumni (Ethan Eisenberg and Katie Gruskin) will give informal presentations related to their honors theses including the skills that they have developed as part of the thesis process. Together, we will enjoy Lynn Breedlove’s story, The Birth of the Homobile, and will brainstorm what “drives” us toward building our own community spaces by doing some free-writing.
