MA in English

The entrance requirements for the Master of Arts (MA) Program in English are:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least 36 credits in English, exclusive of freshman composition. (Applicants who present fewer than 36 undergraduate credits in English may remedy this deficiency by taking additional courses as recommended by the English graduate committee.)

  2. A 3.0 overall cumulative undergraduate grade point average. Applicants whose undergraduate grade point average in English is less than 3.0 may be admitted on the basis of GRE scores. Please note that the GRE is otherwise not required for application to the MA program.

We offer two concentrations in our MA program: a Literature track and a Creative Writing track. When you are applying, be sure to indicate which track you intend to pursue.

Please submit the following materials to the Graduate School (not the English Department) to apply to our MA program:

  1. All applications are submitted through an online application system. To begin your application, create an account or log in to the system and pay the application fee. All documents listed below must be uploaded to the system in order for you to have a complete application for review.

  2. All undergraduate transcripts, including schools with transfer credits, in sealed envelopes

  3. One essay stating intent and objective of your graduate studies

  4. Three letters of recommendation

  5. Academic Writing Sample (totaling 10 pages)

  6. For students applying to the Creative Writing track you should also submit a Creative Writing Sample of 10-20 pages. This can be prose, a small collection of poetry, or a multigenre work.

The English department begins reviewing applications in the fall semester on March 1st and for the spring semester on October 1st. Late applications may be considered; however, applicants should contact the graduate coordinator before submitting their application.

Applications for the Creative Writing track are only considered for fall semester admission. We strongly recommend that applicants for this track submit their applications by March 15th.
