Recognized vs. Unrecognized Organizations

A "recognized" fraternity or sorority is one that is in good standing with the college. All recognized fraternities and sororities have worked hard to earn their official status. These organizations have the privilege of using college facilities and equipment, tabling, posting and hanging fliers, holding meetings and/or programs on campus, having an advisor, inducting new members that will be recognized by the college, and participating in campus events such as the Club & Involvement Fair and Meet the Greeks. Click here for more information about our recognized organizations, including how to get involved.

An "unrecognized" fraternity or sorority is one which chooses to exist "off campus" and does not follow college policies and regulations. In many cases, these organizations seem to operate like recognized organizations, but they have NO AFFILIATION with SUNY New Paltz whatsoever. These organizations are not permitted to use college facilities, post fliers, or have any of the privileges recognized organizations have earned.  Members of these organizations cannot participate in the Fraternity/Sorority governing bodies, do not have access to programming dollars, and can't attend leadership retreats or conferences sponsored by the college.

As a student, it is important to understand that if you choose to become a part of an unrecognized organization you will never be recognized by the college and sometimes by the national board as an official member of that organization. Therefore, be sure to verify the status of an organization with the Center for Student Engagement before beginning New Member Education Program for a fraternity or sorority.

SUNY New Paltz does not recognize the following organizations. As a result, the organizations below do not fall under SUNY New Paltz's hazing guidelines and Fraternity and Sorority Life procedures. If a student chooses to join any of the below stated organizations, the University cannot and will not support such choices.  Engaging in these actions may potentially endanger the student's safety and ability to hold any student life position.  The unrecognized organizations at New Paltz are known to students as:

  • Xi Gamma (fraternity)- formerly Kappa Sigma

  • Mu Iota Upsilon (sorority)

  • Phi Sigma Chi (fraternity)
  • Pi Phi Delta (sorority) - formerly Delta Phi Epsilon

  • Sigma Gamma Rho (sorority)
