Student Capstones and Thesis Work

It was genuinely difficult to keep up with the staggering volume of galleries, exhibitions, original research and video presentations New Paltz students published at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. We'd like to take time this summer to spotlight individual projects and give this exceptional scholarship and creative work its due.

Today, we're cycling back to the Virtual Engineering Design EXPO, with a potentially game-changing design promoting sustainable 3D printing.

Ian Lorber '20 (Mechanical Engineering), Chris Lopez ’20 (Mechanical Engineering) and Richard Moretti ’20 (Mechanical Engineering)
Advisor: Assistant Professor Ping-Chuan Wang

"The machine designed in this project recycles scrap PLA plastic commonly used in FDM 3D printers so the material can be reused to print more parts. This machine will help make additive manufacturing a more sustainable method of design by reducing the waste that comes with failed parts."

From our community

The Ornithology Lab (@newpaltzornithology) is one of the best social media follows at SUNY New Paltz, particularly during the spring and summer months. Last week they made friends with this "very large and loud" pileated woodpecker. The team of students, mentored by Associate Professor Kara Belinsky, has been able to continue its outdoor work this summer while following masking and social distancing guidelines. Read more about this project here.
