Articulating transfer credits

Pre- and post-matriculation transferred credits will appear on the progress report. Pre-matriculated credits should be sent to the Office of Admissions and post-matriculated credits should be sent to Records & Registration.

Courses not in the transfer equivalency database will be found at the bottom of the progress report.

Unarticulated courses that may apply to the General Education categories are evaluated by Academic Advising.

Unarticulated courses that may apply to the major/minor are evaluated by the appropriate Department (i.e. Math evaluates Math courses).

Unarticulated courses will have a department prefix and one of the following codes:

  • 000 -elective or course equivalent, level unknown
  • 001 -lower division course or elective
  • 003 -upper division course or elective

Note: Courses noted as APL000 are Applied Non-Liberal Arts credits. NCR000 are developmental or non-credit bearing courses.

To articulate a course and make it equivalent to a New Paltz course:

1. Consider if the equivalent should apply to just this one student (will not appear in the transfer equivalency database) or to all students (will appear in the transfer equivalency database). Please discuss the "all" option with the Department Chair before submitting.

2. Review course descriptions and/or syllabi to help make the appropriate determination. (Student should supply these.)

3. Consider the course level (lower division /upper division) when determining equivalencies.  Can a change in level be justified?

Procedure

The advisor determines that a transfer course is equivalent to a New Paltz major course.  In order to make this equivalency, the advisor makes the change in my.newpaltz.edu. The advisor will be asked if this change should be applied to all students.  (Workflow approvals may be initiated depending on the answer to how the change will be applied.)

Go to my.newpaltz.edu > Faculty Services > Advising Menu > Degree Works Progress Report Changes

The advisor may approve a transfer course as a substitution or elective (i.e, it is not directly correlated to a New Paltz course).  In order to make this equivalency, the advisor makes the change in my.newpaltz.edu.

Go to my.newpaltz.edu > Faculty Services > Advising Menu > Degree Works Progress Report Changes
