Currrent Research: A new instrument called a CCDXRD currently being developed at the NASA GSFC. It is a revolutionary x-ray diffractometer that is small in size, faster than traditional XRDs, provides diffraction data within 2-4 minutes, provides k-Fluorescence data within 4-6 minutes, and does not require sample preparation. This instrument is slated to fly to the Moon, Venus, and Mars in future missions to provide mineralogy data.
