The use of fetish figures is a particular characteristic of the Kongo peoples. Often encrusted with nails or sometimes furnished with cavities to hold special things, these figures were used in acts of divination to repel evil forces. This figure was sculpted in anticipation of being covered with nails. Therefore the arms and genitals were not included, since they would never have been seen. The face, however, is carefully realized and is distinguised by its glass eyes and teeth.
