Among the Bamun peoples some masks function in relation to the Kwifo, a male society answerable to the king. The Kwifo is responsible for enforcing the law and maintaining social order, as well as upholding the customs and values of the ancestors.

The kwifo carry out their responsibilities in large groups and wearing of masks guarantees anonymity. This mask is a type known as a cap mask that is worn on the top of the head covering the forehead. The face of the wearer would have been concealed by the costume of the Kwifo.
