In Memoriam

Susan Wisherd

A professor emerita and the former chair of the Department of Art Education at SUNY New Paltz, Susan Wisherd will always be remembered by colleagues as dedicated to both her students and department.

During her lifetime, New Paltz resident Wisherd was an active supporter of several Hudson Valley nonprofit organizations, including the Elting Memorial Library, Mohonk Preserve, Omega Institute, SUNY New Paltz’s Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art and Sojourner Truth Library, Unison Arts Center, and Women’s Studio Workshop. After her death in 2017, through her long-term vision and legacy estate planning, her bequests totaling approximately $2.5 million to SUNY New Paltz will continue to sustain and advance these organizations for the benefit of the greater community.

Wisherd’s generosity extended beyond the Hudson Valley with gifts to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, and to WNET Public Television in New York City.

Frank Skartados

State Assemblymember Frank Skartados ’85 (Political Science) passed away April 15, 2018, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 62.

Skartados was born in Greece in 1956 and moved to New York in 1970. He worked in the restaurant industry before enrolling at SUNY New Paltz, and following his graduation, he earned a master’s in international studies from the State University of California at Sacramento.

Skartados returned to New York to serve as chairman of the Health Department at the New York Military Academy. He later founded the Academy Street Business Association in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and worked closely with the Mayor’s office to help attract new residents to the city.

In 2008, Skartados was elected to serve as State Assemblymember to the 100th District. He narrowly lost a reelection bid in 2010 but recaptured the seat in a 2012 special election.

During his time in the Assembly, Skartados supported bills that focused on the environment, criminal justice reforms, consumer protection, veterans’ benefits and education funding.

It is with sadness that the College shares the news of the death of Mary Grindrod Reid ’45 on Sept. 29, 2018. She was 94.

Reid came to New Paltz from her hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1939 and married her husband, Robert in 1945.

The Reids settled in the New Paltz area, and Mary took on multiple roles within the community. In addition to her work as a teacher, she sat on the New Paltz Village Planning Board, served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for the Reformed Church of New Paltz, and was active in numerous other local organizations.

In 1973, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller appointed Reid to the SUNY New Paltz College Council, on which she served for 10 years.
