The Hudson Valley Writing Project offers unique summer experiences for writers at the region’s most important educational, cultural and historic sites and beautiful natural settings. 


AGES 7-9

EVERYONE IS A WRITER
SUNY New Paltz

Imaginations soar in this unique camp where we will learn to think like writers by experimenting with many kinds of writing, and gathering inspiration and ideas from playing games on campus, creating art, and reading children’s books. 


AGES 10-12

WRITING FOR FUN: The Sky's The Limit
SUNY New Paltz

Exciting writing prompts, art activities, and inspiring visits to the campus art museum and planetarium will spark our creativity as we learn about the craft of writing and how to revise and refine our work. 


AGES 10-14

BECOMING AUTHORS & ARTISTS
Storm King Art Center

This world famous sculpture park is the perfect setting to write, learn about and make art, while exploring the park's rolling hills, fields, meadows, and woodland.

A STORY TO TELL
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor

Our writing will be inspired by local history, artifacts, photographs, diaries, and speeches that we discover at the Hall of Honor and in visits to Fort Montgomery, Washington's Headquarters, and the New Windsor Cantonment.

MAKING ART & HISTORY ON THE RIVERFRONT 
Clermont State Historic Site

Explore regional history and the creative process as we sit on the banks of the Hudson River and join centuries of writers and artists who have celebrated the landscape through word and image.

COURAGEOUS WRITERS: HYDE PARK
Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Historic Sites
July 18-22     9 a.m.-3 p.m.     $295
We will write and explore the power of history to inform the future as we hike beautiful parklands, visit FDR’s Presidential Library, his family home, the Vanderbilt estate, and Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-kill.

EXPLORING NEW PALTZ, THEN & NOW
Huguenot Street, New Paltz
July 25-29     9 a.m.-3 p.m.     $295
Through tours of historic stone houses, walks in a wildlife sanctuary, and visits to a working farm, we will explore and write about the remarkable place that is New Paltz.

AGES 12-18

NATURE WRITING IN THE FOREST & ON THE RIVER
Black Rock Forest
As we hike in the forest and kayak on the Hudson River, we will become nature writers, developing our observational and descriptive skills by trying many different types of writing. Registration through Black Rock Forest.

TEEN WRITERS INSTITUTE

Working in a creative workshop setting, we will tell our stories through personal essays, fiction, and poetry. We'll share ideas and respond to each other's work as we polish our writing for an anthology.
