Duties: Academic Computing Services (ACS) at the State University of New York at New Paltz invites applications for the position of Academic Computing Department Support Technician. This is a full-time, on-site position as a member of the Academic Computing team supporting the Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Programs. The position will assist in maintaining and supporting an IT environment as required for the needs of these academic programs. The supported facilities include PC's as well as networked and PC-attached equipment used in classroom and research areas. This position provides for the configuration, installation, deployment, and troubleshooting of the hardware and software used by these majors in the campus facilities as well as a VDI presence. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a learning mindset to work in a team-oriented environment. We are dedicated to supporting learning opportunities to enhance initiatives related to software deployment and automation.

Duties include:

IT support assistance for the Electrical, Computer, and Mechanical Engineering Programs.

IT support assistance for the Hudson Valley Additive Manufacturing Center.

IT support assistance for the Digital Design & Fabrication Program.

Provide an ITS point of contact (liaison) for support areas; participate in the planning of software and peripherals.

Maintain a software application profile consistent throughout the support area.

Perform hands-on fixes at the desktop level, including installing and upgrading software, installing hardware components, and configuring systems and applications.

Assist with equipment upgrades and classroom provisioning including asset management.

Receive and respond to incoming communications, service desk tickets, email, or chat regarding equipment incidents.

Perform preventative maintenance, including the installation of security fixes and patches.

Qualifications: Required:

Associate degree in a related field of study and applicable work experience providing hardware and software support.

Excellent technical knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Proven experience with troubleshooting principles, methodologies, and issue resolution techniques (ITIL).

Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.

Experience with basic network diagnostics.

Experience with Microsoft Active Directory.

Knowledge of trends in technology relating to software applications.

Analytical and problem-solving abilities, with keen attention to detail.

Ability to conduct research into software-related issues and products.

Strong written communication and customer service skills.

Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Flexible and adaptable regarding learning and understanding modern technologies.

Ability to walk, stand, kneel, crouch and lift boxes up to 50 lbs.


Bachelor’s degree

2-3 years of experience providing technical support of higher education or applicable IT field.

Familiarity with computer-interfaced fabrication equipment and CAD software.

Solid working knowledge of automation technologies.

Experience with system deployment and endpoint management

Experience with mobile device management (MDM), such as JAMF and/or Intune.

Experience with inventory management.

Experience working with and serving diverse populations.

Basic understanding of Linux and macOS operating systems.
