How to Apply

Our online application system allows students to manage their application process. Please review the steps below before submitting your application:

STEP 1: CREATE AN ACCOUNT

NEW students may create an account here.

RETURNING users may login here to access the application system using their email address and password that was included when creating their account.


STEP 2: SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

Once you have logged into the system, select the term that you would like to begin your program and complete the online application form. NOTE: Certain programs restrict admission to a specific term.

Please email gradadmissions@newpaltz.edu if you do not see the program that you would like to pursue.


STEP 3: PAY APPLICATION FEE

Pay the $60 application fee online via credit card.


STEP 4: UPLOAD DOCUMENTS

Documents you will need to submit:

  1. Admission essay/statement of purpose 
  2. Copies of transcript and mark sheets from every college/university attended.
  3. Copies of standardized test scores
    (GRE or GMAT; TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic) 
  4. 3 letters of recommendation from an academic teacher or school counselor. 
    Students will need to provide the faculty member’s name and email address in order to complete the request process.
  5. Resume/CV (optional) 
  6. Portfolio (if required) 
  7. Translations and credential evaluations of transcripts by a member organization of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.


STEP 5: CHECK YOUR STATUS

You can log in anytime as a Returning User to modify your application or monitor its status. Decision time varies depending on the department.

Adhering to your program's admission deadline is crucial to the success of your application. Apply early to ensure timely application review and early decisions. General application deadlines are the following:

We close admission for international students residing outside of the U.S. who have already begun their application on Dec. 1 for Spring (January) term, and June 15 for Fall (August) term. Please note that these deadlines are not applicable to international students residing within the U.S. at the time of admission wishing to transfer their I-20 to SUNY New Paltz. No new applications will be able to be created or accepted after November 15.

SUNY New Paltz reserves the right to alter application due dates without notice.

The basic requirement for admission to the Graduate School is a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.

Students must submit translations and credential evaluations of their transcripts by a member organization of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. There may be exceptions to this requirement by program; contact gradadmissions@newpaltz.edu for more information. 

Note for Indian applicants: SUNY New Paltz will consider a three-year bachelor's degree from India as equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor's degree if:  

  • The three-year degree was earned in Division or Class I at universities accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of A. 
  • All other three-year degrees from India will be considered as the equivalent of three years of undergraduate study.

Prospective international students for whom English is not the native language, and any applicant whose undergraduate degree is from a country where English is not the main language of instruction, are required to demonstrate English language proficiency. Review the chart below for methods of demonstrating language proficiency.

Other ways to demonstrate English language proficiency:

  • A certificate of English Language Proficiency from the Haggerty English Language Program at SUNY New Paltz.
  • Official transcripts indicating a college degree from a U.S. institution. If the degree was earned more than three years prior to the submission of a graduate application, then the student must provide acceptable TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or DET scores. 

Conditional admission for applicants with limited English proficiency 

In the event that you are offered admission having only demonstrated a marginal level of English Language Proficiency, you will be required to have English language instruction and to sit for a placement exam upon arrival at SUNY New Paltz. The exam includes:

  • A test of grammar, reading and listening comprehension.
  • An oral interview
  • A writing sample. 

Based upon your performance on the exam, you will be required to register for additional English language instruction. All students must demonstrate the required level of English proficiency before being allowed to begin graduate coursework.

Scholarships & Funding

The following scholarships and funding opportunities are available to International Graduate Students: 

Teaching Assistant (TA) and Graduate Assistant (GA) positions are available to matriculated graduate students who are in good academic standing and who are making good progress toward their degree. The procedure for application for an assistantship, including the selection criteria, are established by deans and academic departments, and publicized by graduate departments.

Criteria for the awarding of an assistantship may include, but are not limited to: undergraduate grade-point average, standardized test scores, past experience or training, interest in the field of study, letters of recommendation, or personal interview. More information on how to apply and current open positions can be found on our Teaching Assistant/Graduate Assistant webpage.  

Note that assistantships are first come first serve, so it is important to apply for your program as soon as possible.  

To recognize academic excellence and to prepare future administrators and public accountants, SUNY New Paltz offers a limited number of scholarships to highly qualified applicants. Consideration will also be given to financial need. Submit your MBA Scholarship Application today! 

This fellowship opportunity is designed to recognize academic excellence of incoming students matriculated in our MS in Electrical Engineering program. Students receive a 3-credit tuition waiver in exchange for 10 hours of research assistance per week. It is available to eight students on a competitive basis. 

In an effort to encourage a diverse population of graduate students, SUNY New Paltz offers a one-year out-of-state tuition waiver to all incoming MFA students who are not residents of New York State.This allows non-resident students to pay regular in-state tuition rates. MFA students must seek and be granted New York State residency during their first year to continue to receive the in-state tuition rate.  This program is available to international students who are not US citizens and enrolled in one of our MFA programs. These students may receive the MFA Scholarship rate for two years without applying for New York State residency. See Tuition & Fees Chart for rate.  

The RCPA is an internal grant program for matriculated graduate students. The purpose of the program is to support and encourage research and creative projects that enhance the graduate students' professional development as they pursue their master's degree or Certificate of Advanced Study. All matriculated graduate students in good standing (cumulative gpa of 3.0 or higher) are eligible to apply for this grant. The maximum award is $400 per annum. More information on how to apply and current open positions can be found on the Research Funding webpage

This scholarship is a $10,000 tuition waiver designed to recognize the exceptional talent of an incoming MFA student in Ceramics. It is available to one student on a competitive basis each year.

This $2000 award given to an entering MFA Art Studio Student with a preference in Printmaking. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by Graduate Art Program faculty, consisting of the Printmaking area head and the MFA coordinator.  Students will be selected based upon merit as seen through the candidate's MFA application and portfolio. Financial need will guide the selection and preference would be given to a candidate from an under-served community.

Newly Accepted Students

Congratulations on your acceptance for admission to the Graduate School at SUNY New Paltz. You have made the decision to advance yourself academically and professionally.

Please visit the International Student Services page for important next-step information, also outlined below. 

As an international student, you are required to submit additional documents in order to receive your I-20 Certificate of Eligibility. You will need this document prior to scheduling your F-1 (student) visa interview at your local consulate.

Log into your applicant portal to upload documents your financial documents (information below). Completing this prior to your acceptance will help ensure issuance of your I-20 Certificate of Eligibility is not delayed. You can also upload them after you have been accepted, but your I-20 cannot be issued until the documents have been uploaded and reviewed.

Please only upload the documents to your application portal. You do not need to email these separately. The I-20 can only be issued after you are accepted by your academic program.

Bank Statement Requirements:

  • Bank Statement and/or Bank letter on official bank letterheadmust be issued within the last 6 months. The bank statement must show available funds for 1-year of study. If you are unsure of the amount you must document, please contact us at international@newpaltz.edu to confirm.
  • Funding can be from personal savings, family, or a sponsor. You may have multiple sources of funding.
  • If the funds are not in your name, please read and complete the International Student Financial Statement and upload it with supporting documentation. If you have multiple sponsors, please have each fill out a separate copy of this form.
  • Make sure to keep a set of original financial documents for when you apply for your F-1 visa.

Student visa instructions

 

Your enrollment process is nearly complete. Your final steps are to:

  • Log into your applicant portal and complete the Decision Reply Form
  • Submit your enrollment deposit of $100, which is applied towards your first term's tuition.
  • Connect with your advisor to build your schedule.
  • Register for classes. Students will receive instructions via email about how and when they will register for classes depending on their academic program.

This $2000 award given to an entering MFA Art Studio Student with a preference in Printmaking. Note about Financial Documentation:

US Citizenship and Immigration Services requires evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of an international student's academic program. Official financial/bank statements indicating sufficient funds are required to support one's education at SUNY New Paltz for a period of at least one year.  

Bank statements amounts should total no less than $38,858.00 USD, to cover all school fees, as well as additional books, supplies and personal expenses. Financial documentation must be in English and must be in United States Dollars (USD) or shown at the applicable conversion rate.   

Submit the SUNY Foreign Student Financial Form with copies of financial documents verifying the availability of funding for undergraduate study in the United States to intadmissions@newpaltz.eduAfter we receive this and verify it, we will send you the I-20 document needed for your visa interview via DHL Express, and your SEVIS ID number and DHL tracking number will be sent to you by email.
