The SUNY New Paltz General Education Board
A Faculty Governance Central Commitee
SUNY New Paltz is a four-year university with a strong liberal arts, sciences and fine arts tradition. Our curriculum emphasizes the value of these fields of study by requiring students to dedicate a significant portion of their undergraduate credits to General Education (GE) coursework. The disciplines offered to our students are broad and represent a range from the applied fields to the pure knowledge fields. Overall, GE course requirements at SUNY New Paltz serve to foster free thought, good citizenship and resilience as students are trained in rigorous knowledge practices.
The General Education Board, which was created in 2002, is charged with the ongoing oversight of the GE program. Our tasks have included: developing course approval guidelines, assisting faculty with GE course development, reviewing and assisting faculty members with GE course assessment plans, and reviewing assessment results with an eye toward GE program improvement. The GE Board developed the most recent proposal GE IV, which was approved by the faculty in 2016. The GE Board now administers the entire GE program. We continue to work closely with relevant offices on campus to provide opportunities for faculty development and mentoring.
