SUNY New Paltz is excited to partner with many local high schools to offer University in the High School courses to their students. While we aren't actively growing our program, we welcome high schools to reach out to learn more about applying to be a UHS High School Partner.
- Please email Program Assistant, Dylan Hurley at email@example.com to learn more.
Admission into the UHS program
New Paltz and International Academic Alliance (IAA) will actively review the academic record of all students who express an earnest interest in participating in this program. Students’ grade point average (GPA) should be high enough to demonstrate that they are equipped to take on this additional coursework at a college level of instruction. Successful completion of any preparatory work and pre-requisites for the particular course of interest is required.
High school administrators who have agreed to offer the program will organize the scheduled courses at the high school to augment the already existing Chinese high school curriculum.
Registration and College Transcripts
After payment is received, the student will be registered in the course(s) chosen and receive a New Paltz student number. Students can use that to access college information at my.newpaltz.edu on the New Paltz web page (www.newpaltz.edu). After grades have been submitted by the instructor, students can request a transcript by going to the my.newpaltz.edu site.
We have found that credits earned in the UHS program with a grade of “C” or better are usually accepted by American colleges and universities. Students interested in attending a particular college or university are advised to inquire about the transferability of New Paltz credit to that particular college prior to enrolling in the UHS program.
Students may officially withdraw from the course(s) by the specified deadline, for any reason, and will then not receive a grade.
English Language Capability
All courses will be taught in English and students will be expected to demonstrate a sound competence in oral and written English skills. For those whose skills are not commensurate with college work, special English language courses will be offered by IAA to better prepare such students.
Students will be required to take an English Language Competency exam prior to enrolling in New Paltz courses to determine their level of achievement. Students enrolled in the UHS program will continue to receive English language courses to ensure they are able to learn the coursework at the required college level.
The instructors selected to teach in the program will be reviewed and approved by the appropriate department chair at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Hiring criteria will be similar to those employed for retaining part-time teachers chosen to teach the specified course or a similar on the New Paltz campus. Throughout the semester, each instructor will have a New Paltz faculty mentor to ensure that sound pedagogical approaches are used.
High School Grades & Official Record
All grades will be given at the close of the semester; any grade problems, attendance problems, etc. will be handled by the instructor, using New Paltz guidelines. A liaison employed by IAA in China and staff member at the Office of Regional Education at New Paltz will be designated to assist with these problems. Additional problems may be handled directly by New Paltz staff in collaboration with IAA.
To earn New Paltz college credit, students will comply with all course requirements stated in the course syllabus. Academic integrity will be strongly enforced by the instructor and New Paltz. The New Paltz academic integrity policy, available on the college’s website, will be communicated to students on all course outlines.
Official Academic Record
All credit earned through the New Paltz UHS/China program will result in an official college transcript (record). This is a permanent record of all courses, credits and final grades accumulated by the student. The grades earned will become a part of the student’s grade point average (GPA) at New Paltz.
Acceptance to New Paltz College
Students may elect to apply to New Paltz college and will be accepted if the student meets the college’s admission requirements. Credits earned through the UHS would be accepted by New Paltz and applied to the student’s transcript of courses. Participation in the UHS program does not automatically ensure admission into the college and/or area of major concentration.
