Purpose of EE Program

The Division of Engineering Programs at SUNY New Paltz is committed to academic excellence.

Students in the Electrical Engineering Program have access to some of the best undergraduate laboratory spaces and equipment in higher education. The program integrates both lecture and laboratory experience into the curriculum which helps students develop their knowledge and skills. Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Program hold coveted positions at regional, national, and global companies, while others have chosen to pursue graduate studies at larger research focused institutions.

Mission

This mission closely follows that of our institution and is stated as:

  1. Offering high-quality undergraduate programs in Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and a master’s program in Electrical Engineering to a diverse student body;
  2. Providing engineering education and technical support to the campus community, regional industry and the community-at-large;
  3. Admitting students who show promise of succeeding in the challenging field of engineering;
  4. Having our students gain technical knowledge, social skills and confidence to contribute as productive and responsible members of the engineering profession and the society.

Program Educational Objectives of the Electrical Engineering Program

Program Educational Objectives describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve in three to five years. The educational objectives of the Electrical Engineering program are to produce graduates who: 

  1. Become proficient contributors to the engineering profession using technical and communication skills. 
  2. Work beyond their primary responsibilities by providing service through active engagement in global society. 

Student Outcomes of the Electrical Engineering Program

Student outcomes represent the desired knowledge and skills that Electrical Engineering students must have acquired by the time of graduation. All of our engineering programs have adopted ABET Criterion 3 as guiding student outcomes, as specified below.

By the time of graduation, Electrical Engineering students must have demonstrated an ability to:

  1. Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
