Reopening FAQ of the day
The College's fall 2020 reopening plan is highly detailed and dense, and our corresponding list of FAQs runs to nearly 10,000 words (and counting!). In an effort to make this very important information easier to absorb, we'll highlight questions and answers in this newsletter, one per day, as the fall semester approaches.
Please note: We are working to update and add FAQs as this situation evolves. We will prioritize sharing the most current and relevant information in this space.
What were the guiding principles for the fall 2020 reopening plan?
The Planning Team developed policies, guidelines and recommendations with a focus on continuing to fulfill the College’s educational mission in a fiscally responsible way, while maintaining the health and safety of all students, faculty, staff and the New Paltz community.
The planning adheres to core guiding principles outlined by SUNY system administration:
  • Put safety first: When making financial decisions, safety comes first
  • Protect the core academic areas of excellence
  • Maintain our fundamental mission: The broadest possible access to world-class teaching, research and scholarship
  • Sustain academic programs and achieve operational efficiencies
  • Demonstrate agility in responding rapidly to workforce needs
  • Be mindful of and support vulnerable populations

Student Capstones and Thesis Work
It was genuinely difficult to keep up with the staggering volume of galleries, exhibitions, original research and video presentations New Paltz students published at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. We'd like to take time this summer to spotlight individual projects and give this exceptional scholarship and creative work its due.
Today, an exploration of possibilities unlocked by "silent" music performance technologies, from the Student Research Symposium.
 
Silent Band

"Silent Band is a way to listen to live performances via headphones with no audible electrical sound sources like speakers ... This gives private and DIY venues the opportunity to host shows in the comfort that they will not have to worry about noise ordinance in their location ... This whole concept is to still give that 'live show' feel."
