The program encompasses an eclectic mixture of backgrounds and approaches, and provides access to a variety of studios, including:

  • a 5-station Macintosh computer lab for the exclusive use of VRL graduate students, with flatbed and slide scanner
  • a 24-station Macintosh computer lab used for classes and otherwise open to students, with two flatbed scanners, black & white and color laser printers, a cd burner, and video projection set-up. Software includes the Adobe Typeface library, QuarkXPress, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Director, Dreamweaver, Final Cut, Fireworks, Flash, Fontographer, GoLive, InDesign, PageMaker, SoundEdit, Word; all computers have Internet access
  • 2 hi-res, 24" wide roll-fed, archival color printers
  • Extensive bookbinding facilities
  • a variety of photographic and video equipment; BFA students in Design and Photography and VRL students have preferential borrowing privileges
  • Non-silver, black & white, color and graduate darkrooms
  • Lighting studio
  • Classroom space
  • the college's Web server and facilities of other areas in the Art Department

The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, which adjoins the Smiley Art Building, presents exhibitions of historical and contemporary importance and related interpretive programs. The permanent collection, numbering over 4000 objects, includes strong emphasis in photography, contemporary metals, and American, European, and Asian prints.
