The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman
and the Members of Tectonic Theater Project
Directed by Beverly Brumm
The
story of the death is well known. Matthew Shepard, 21,
was a slight, gay college student in 1998 when he was waylaid
at a Laramie WY, bar, driven out of town, robbed, beaten
and left to die. Moises Kaufman's play traces the efforts
of a troupe of NY actors from the Tectonic Theatre Project
to make sense of the tragedy. They traveled to Laramie
six times, interviewing 200 people, in an attempt to understand
the impact of this shocking event.
"The Laramie Project" shows them asking questions,
interviewing the local people, learning their way around
Laramie. Characters reveal themselves gradually; details
of the crime are unraveled; the implications, for Laramie
and for the nation, remain a question mark at play's end.
