A "recognized" Greek organization is one that is in good standing with the college. All recognized fraternities and sororities have worked hard to earn their official status. These organizations have the privilege of using college facilities and equipment, tabling, posting and hanging flyers, holding meetings and/or programs on campus, having an advisor, inducting new members that will be recognized by the college, and participating in campus functions such as Greek Weekend.
Rush! Be on the look out for flyers and advertisements inviting you to meetings to learn more about becoming a part of Greek Life at New Paltz. |
An "unrecognized" Greek organization is one which chooses to exist "off campus" and does not follow college policies and regulations. These organizations are not permitted to use college facilities, post flyers, or have any of the privileges recognized organizations have earned.
It is important to understand that if you choose to become a part of an unrecognized organization you will never be recognized by the college and sometimes by the national board as an official member of that Greek organization. Therefore, be sure to verify the status of an organization with the Office of Student Activities and Union Services before beginning a pledge program or intake education program.
