If you are interested in meeting new people, learning about yourself and others, and gaining valuable experience, then this is the program for you! The SUNY New Paltz Emerging Leaders Program is a fun and dynamic learning opportunity that will encourage you to explore an understanding of self, an understanding of others, and an understanding of what it means to be a productive community member. The program will introduce you to leadership and followership through hands-on activities, discussion groups, and self reflection.

Overview
The Emerging Leaders Program will encourage you to explore what it means to be an effective leader for today is.It will provide you with the tools to explore your own definition of leadership.

The program is based on the philosophy that leadership comes in many forms; you do not necessarily need to hold a formal leadership position to make a significant contribution. Emerging Leaders will introduce you to leadership and followership through hands-on activities, discussion groups and self-reflection. We are all born leaders and this program will help you realize your potential.

Benefits
Being involved in Emerging Leaders will give you an opportunity to meet people and make friends with a similar drive. The program also focuses on empowering you as an individual, addressing the impact of ethics in one's life, celebrating diversity in an inclusive community and developing the skills to work within the group. There will be two Leadership Tracks: for those that prefer the day (Bi-Weekly on Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m.), and for those that prefer the evening (Bi-Weekly on Thursdays, 7:00 p.m.). We will work to ensure that all participants are able to develop their skills in a time convenient for them.

Past Emerging Leaders have distinguished themselves as leaders by becoming Resident Assistants, Orientation Leaders, Student Activities managers and involved in many clubs and organizations. The benefits of Emerging Leaders go beyond graduation however. Employers look for personal characteristics such as integrity, motivation, communication skills and self-confidence. You can begin to develop all of these skills in the Emerging Leaders program!

Requirements
The program is a two-semester commitment to allow you to get the full benefits of the program without overwhelming you with requirements. The requirements are:

  • Attending the opening field trip
  • Participate in a workshop track[Day: Bi-Weekly Tuesdays-11:30 a.m., Bi-Weekly Thursdays 7:00 p.m.].
  • Involvement in group service learning projects
  • Attending a leadership retreat

Workshops
As mentioned in the requirements of the program, you will participate in a choice of workshops provided by the program. These workshops are presented by members of the campus and local community. This is great way to get to know faculty, staff and members of our local community one on one! The workshops cover five different areas:

Diversity: Workshops in this area focus on issues of diversity and multiculturalism as well as communication skills and learning styles.
Service Learning: Learn about dynamics and theories of power and influence by taking part in group process activities.
Ethical Reflection: Developing your own selfvalue, working on confrontation skills and defining what your values are.
Core Requirements: In these workshops you will learn skills such as goal setting, brainstorming, and theories of management.
Process-Oriented: Here we will look at group roles, conflict management and methods of decision making.
