Time frames
How long it takes to get a job printed depends on a number of criteria: quantity, complexity, size, and workload in the shop. (See the "Meeting Deadlines" entry in the "Design and Graphics: Producing a Publication" section of this guide.)

COPY CENTER

The copy center takes jobs that are black only, for standard sizes (812 x 11, 812 x 14, 11 x 17), on smooth papers, including NCR. It is most cost effective for quantities up to about 2000, depending on the complexity of the job. It is equipped with two digital duplicators and a 24" wide-format printer.

The copy center is considered an an on-demand operation. Jobs that do not require gluing or padding can be completed quickly. Short runs can occasionally be done while you wait. Depending on the size of the piece, some finishing can be done inline, such as three-hole punching, corner stapling, top stitching, and booklet making (wire stitch on spine). Please order the quantity you need as you need it.

Orders may be submitted directly to the Print Shop with properly prepared originals and a completed work request form. (Orders submitted to teh Design Office will be sent to print by them.)

Digital Store Front- Allows you to send files (done in any program) from your computer directly to the Print Shop. The Printing Work Request is done electronically from your computer. (contact the Printing Service Coordinator at x2646 for details.)

Files can also be e-mailed to printshop@newpaltz.edu or put on the P drive. The Printing Work Request must be filled out in hard copy and delivered to the Print Shop.

Your hard copy original and Printing Work Request can be delivered to the Print Shop. The originals must be very good quality to insure quality reproduction.

OFFSET PRINTING

Offset printing is used for any job requiring color ink, more than one color, long runs (black or color), and special stocks such as textured paper or envelopes. It is generally more costeffective than copying for runs over 2000. The offset operation is equipped with a digital platemaker, three two-color presses (one set up for envelopes) and a one-color press.

The offset process requires making a plate for each color for each sheet or page. Once a plate is made, it is then positioned around a cylinder on the press. The image from the plate is transferred (offset) to a blanket, and then to the paper. A series of rollers control the flow of the ink. With set up times, longer runs, and ink wash-ups, jobs require a fair amount of time and departments are encouraged to order what they need for 3-12 months.

Orders may be submitted directly to the Print Shop with properly prepared originals and a completed work request form. (Orders submitted to the Design Office will be sent to print by them.)
