APPENDIX J – Page Order/Numbering

Document page number
Sequential numbers starting with 1, beginning on the first page after the inside front cover. Marked on the dummy/mock-up for the printer.

Folio page number
The number printed on the page. Page one is always a right-hand page.

Pages per book
The total number of pages must be a multiple of four in a wire stitched book. There are four folio pages on each sheet of paper printed. (Example: For a 8 1/2 x 11 book, 11 x 17 sheets of paper get folded in half to create four 8 1/2 x 11 folio pages on each sheet. Three sheets are needed for a 12-page document.)

Text plus cover
If the paper used for the cover is different than the paper used for the text (inside) pages, you have "text plus cover" or "text plus 4." The cover is numbered separately because when the paper is different, it is most often printed on a different press, and then put together or "married" with the text pages in the binding process.

Self cover
If the paper is the same for the cover and the text pages, you have "self cover." All sheets would normally be printed on the same machine. The cover pages are counted in sequence with all other pages in the document.

Standard numbering sequence
The following examples show document and folio numbering for either a 20-page self cover or 16-page book with a four page cover.
