Study Abroad Programs

Summer Study in Oviedo, Spain

Program Location

towerThis summer program takes place at the University of Oviedo in northern Spain. For more than 20 years the University of Oviedo has held courses in Spanish Language and Culture for foreign students.

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias and is the administrative, commercial and cultural center of the region. Part of "Green Spain," Asturias offers beautiful mountains, picturesque villages and miles of seacoast.

Academic Program

Students take a placement exam on arrival and are placed in one of 3 levels of Spanish language instruction.  Students at each level receive approximately 5-6 hours of language instruction per day, Monday through Friday.  Grammar and vocabulary are the focus of the morning session.  Oral and written expression/comprehension are stressed in the afternoon.  Students at the Intermediate or Advanced level will also have 20 hours of society and culture studies, choosing one modular course from several complementary electives available. (Students at the Elementary level receive additional Spanish language studies instead.

The following courses are usually offered each summer:

  • Elementary Spanish (6 credits)
  • Intermediate Spanish (4 credits)
  • Advanced Spanish (4 credits)
  • Spanish & Latin American Literature*(2 credit)
  • History & Art of Spain*(2 credit)
  • Aspects of Spanish Culture*(2 credit)

*Intermediate/Advanced Level Students only.

Cultural Activities

Three Saturday excursions to interesting places in the region (full day excursions), lectures, cultural and recreational visits, welcome and farewell parties are a part of the program.

Qualifications

All undergraduate students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply..

Credits

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will earn six undergraduate credits.

Housing

Due to renovations, the University dormitory we requested will not be available for Summer 2008.  Instead, students will be placed in homestays.  Full board is included in the program fee.
