Summer Study in Urbino, Italy Program Location Protected by its walls, the ancient city of Urbino is perched high on a ridge between the Metauro and Foglia valleys. It is surrounded by green hills that bear the landscape features left by inhabitants of centuries past. Even from afar the city appears compact and self-contained. It got its original shape, similar to a ship's bow, from the Romans who founded the municipium Urvinum Mataurense. Today, while Urbino strives to preserve its ancient buildings, many new areas have sprung up outside the city walls. Urbino has a population of 15,000 and must accommodate the 20,000 students enrolled at the University. The University Colleges, which house many of the students who attend the University, were built on a hill not far from the old city. Urbino is the ideal place for a summer course in Italian Language and Culture. It is still a small city where you can get from place to place on foot, and it offers many opportunities for foreign students to meet people from Urbino as well as university students and professors. Even in the month of August contact with university students and professors is possible since they are in Urbino at this time to take part in the University's summer session. Academic Program Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced course levels are available. Placement is determined by the placement exam. The elementary course is for absolute beginners; all other courses assume that students know the contents of the preceding level. Each course level is dedicated to the teaching of the Italian language in the morning while the afternoon concentrates on Italian civilization and culture. A variety of activities are offered to suit all language levels. Cultural Events During the week, Italian films will be offered on some evenings. On Saturdays there will be optional excursions (for an additional small fee) to artistically important cities in the Marches and neighboring regions. Sunday offers guided tours in Urbino. Recitals and a welcome and farewell dinner round out the program. Language of Instruction All courses will be taught in Italian. Credits Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn 6 undergraduate credits. Qualifications Sophomores, juniors and seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply and at least one (1) semester of college level elementary Italian or its equivalent is recommended. Housing Students enrolled in the program will stay in University of Urbino residence halls. The halls are about a 20 minute walk from the university and the town center. There is a bus service to town. The halls are organized in blocks of 6-8 bedrooms with shared bathroom and kitchenette (unequipped). Both single and double rooms are available. Students are responsible for the costs of their own meals. Inexpensive meals are available on a cash basis at the University cafeteria. Approximate Dates Mid July - Mid August
