Summer Latin American Studies in Ecuador Program Location The Universidad Espiritu Santo is located in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Located on the Guayas River, this urban area is Ecuador's largest city, with a population of approximately 2,500,000 inhabitants. Noted for its hustle and bustle and friendliness of its people, Guayaquil is the hub of an active import-export industry and serves as the financial center of Ecuador. It has several malls with attractive boutiques and numerous theaters and museums. Ecuador is located on the Pacific Ocean and has a wide variety of geographical features including the Andes mountains, the coastal plains, jungle, and the Galapagos Islands. Within an hour's drive by car from Guayaquil, there are several important ecological areas - mangrove swamp land, desert, tropical dry forest, cloud forest and pristine beaches. Universidad Espiritu Santo The Universidad Espiritu Santo is the youngest and fastest growing Ecuadorian university. UEES enrolls more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Academic Program The intensive Spanish language and Latin American Studies Program provides students with an opportunity to develop their speaking, listening, reading comprehension and writing skills in Spanish in a concentrated format. It also provides them with opportunities to study and experience Latin American culture and civilization. In addition to four hours of instruction in Spanish daily, students participate in structured and nonstructured communication activities in this language for several hours, also daily interaction outside the classroom is provided. Students also receive instruction in Latin American studies; these classes are complemented by visits to sites of historical and socio-economic interest. The program usually offers the following courses.
Qualifications All participants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. The program is designed for Latin American Studies majors. Students from other areas (Such as International Relations, History, Business Administration, Nursing) could be considered if they demonstrate proficiency in Spanish and are familiar with the Latin American culture. Credits Six (6) undergraduate credits may be earned per session. Housing Students will live in homestays arranged by the UEES. Each student will be placed with an Ecuadorian host family, who will provide at most meals, light laundry, occasional transportation and a few outings. The homestay is the supportive link for the students in his/her new cultural environment. Approximate Program Dates (4 week session)
