London Theater Seminar Location London is the center of commercial and artistic life in Great Britain. It is justly famous for its parks, monuments, museums, concert halls, and theatres. It is truly one of the greatest cities in the world. Students in the program have the opportunity to study and explore this great city, enjoying the unlimited possibilities of this cultural center. The seminar takes place in and around the city of London with regularly scheduled class meetings. Within London students visit the Actor's Church in Covent Garden, the Globe Theatre, the National Theatre and Camden Lock. Trips are planned outside the city to Bath and Stonehenge. Purpose
Curriculum The program is a two-week seminar in London in January, covering the historic and cultural traditions inherent in British Theatre. Program directors will select plays which offer unique insight into those traditions as seen in the theatre. The seminar will discuss six plays in depth. Other plays are added to the seminar as they become available. Tickets will include the best available at venues ranging from West End to Fringe to experimental Theatres. Free Time Ample free time is provided for seminar members to discover their own London or to pursue special interests that they may have. Whether at the Food Halls of Harrods or Fortnum and Mason's; or the designer's shops on King's Road; or the outdoor antique booths on Portabello Road; or "grunge" stalls at Camden Lock; or the elegant Victorian interiors of public houses (pubs), participants are encouraged to come away with a special insight into this culture. Credit Three upper division undergraduate liberal arts credits (SUNY/New Paltz students may satisfy GE I and II Aesthetic Expression.) Participants from non-SUNY campuses are recommended to meet with their academic advisor to determine if credits earned on a SUNY, New Paltz program are transferable. Credits are automatically transferable between SUNY campuses. Qualifications Students wishing to participate in the seminar for credit must be students in good standing at an accredited college with a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher. Housing and Meals
Participants will stay in student accommodations in the Bloomsbury area of London. The rooms are well maintained and centrally located. Rooms are all doubles, triples (and possibly a few singles) with ensuite bath. Approximate Dates The program takes place during intersession in the first two weeks of January.
