Student Teaching at the University of the Sunshine Coast-Australia ***NEW PALTZ students ONLY*** You must be approved by the Student Teaching Office prior to submitting online application in order to participate in this program. Program Location The University of the Sunshine Coast is located in one of the most beautiful regions in Australia. The Sunshine Coast has world-class surfing beaches, national parks and a sub-tropical climate suited to an outdoor lifestyle. The campus is approximately a 10-minute drive from the beach and one hour from Queensland’s capital, Brisbane. The Sunshine Coast region is alive with restaurants, nightclubs, art galleries and studios, and cultural opportunities. To learn more about the region visit: http://www.sunshinecoast.org/ Program Highlights This is a 13.5-week program in two parts: First, a 2.5-week summer intensive designed to prepare you for your experience in a local school. This is followed by a 2-week break period during which you can do independent travel (at your own expense) or take part in organized excursions (see below). The second portion of the program is a nine week student teaching placement in a Sunshine Coast school. This student teaching program meets the requirements mandated by the New York State Education Department, as well as the by the State University of New York. Student Teaching Placement This placement provides student teaching experience within the Australian schooling system. It introduces students to an Australian perspective on schooling patterns, while at the same time encouraging informed comparative analysis with home-country education systems. This course provides an Australian prospective on schooling. It includes an on-campus seminar series as well as elementary and high school site visits to orient students prior to a series of one-day school observations. This innovative course includes school internship visits to elementary and high schools, in both the public and private sector. Credits Upon successful completion of the program, 9 undergraduate credits will be earned. Qualifications Open only to Senior New Paltz student teaching candidates with approval of both the Student Teaching Coordinator and the Center for International Programs. A minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher is required to apply to the program. Approximate Program Dates Summer/Fall: Mid-June - mid-Sept Accommodation Located within walking distance to campus, apartment style housing has been designed specifically for students. The apartment houses four students who each have a private bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, telephone and internet connection. Each house also contains a living room area, kitchen area and laundry facilities for students to share. The complex includes a swimming pool, tennis courts, game room, on-site management, BBQ and 24 hour security.
