"Students participating in the New Paltz - Middlesex program have the advantage of experiencing first-hand and at relatively low cost the educational system of a British university. New Paltz has established a comprehensive, well-thought-through oreintation process to inform students about the details of the program. Both institutions seem wholly committed to making the program work."

Study Abroad in Seville, Spain

The Seville Study Abroad Program is sponsored by The State University of New York at New Paltz and is administered by the Center for International Programs. It has been in existence since 1971. The program is unique in that it is supervised by a full-time resident director and offers a three credit orientation program focusing on the art history of Spain.

"There is no city in Spain or in the world (according to some Sevillians) as gracious as Seville; the omnipresence of happiness, openness, good humor, imagination and love of life which dominates every gesture, saying and corner of the city, make it unique."

Seville is the political, cultural, and intellectual capital of Andalucia, one of Spain's most populous regions. The Seville Cathedral is the third largest church in the Christian world. Seville is home to a "Plaza de Toros" and to the "Casa Lonja," which contains the archives of the Indies - a valuable source of information on the Spanish colonization of America.

Seville can boast of a dramatic and colorful past. "The Alcazar"and "La Giralda," together with numerous other examples, are structures which symbolize Seville's past as a center of Islamic and Jewish learning and culture. With it's palm shaded avenues, numerous parks, gardens, and plazas it is truly one of Spain's loveliest cities.

The University Of Seville

Founded in the 16th Century, the University of Seville is one of Spain's leading institutions of higher learning. The New Paltz program enables students to take "Cursos para Extranjeros" which are offered by the "Facultades de Filologia, Historia y Geografia" and are taught in Spanish by regular University of Seville faculty.

Students are required to carry a full-time academic load (4-5 three-credit undergraduate academic courses). The orientation and field trips are also an integral part of the program.

Field Trips / Group Activities

During the orientation in Seville, students will visit many points of interest within the city: the Cathedral and its Bell Tower ("La Giralda"), the main symbol of the city: the "Alcazar", a complex of palace building and patios which reflect Moorish architecture: and many other noted sites. Students will visit the "Ciudad Italica," the remains of a Roman city located on the outskirts of Seville. There will be one or two overnight field trips to cities in Andalucia. In the past Cordoba, Granada, and La Costa Del Sol have been included.

The Resident Director

Michael Marfe has been the resident director of the SUNY Seville program since the fall of 1989. He is an American citizen of Spanish heritage who has lived most of his life in Spain. The resident director arranges housing for the students, coordinates the orientation, has office hours at the New Paltz office at the university, and plans and directs the field trips. For most students, Michael will be one of the most important contact persons in Seville.

Housing

Students usually share a bedroom with another student in apartments for students. Students make arrangements with the landlord for payment. Room-rental money is given to the student on a regular basis by the resident director. Apartments are organized by the resident director.
