Objective To provide students with a "total immersion" experience while earning college credit at a foreign university. Program Location The city of Oviedo is one of the most important centers of cultural activity in the northwest of Spain. With nearly 200,000 inhabitants it is also the capital of the "Principado de Asturias", and the geographical, administrative, commercial, and cultural center of the region. The climate in Asturias is quite mild, except in the high mountains, and often rainy. The mountains and villages along the coast are ideal places to vacation. There are a number of ski resorts in the region. Oviedo has a very active cultural life with concerts, operas, conferences, congresses, museums, libraries, exhibitions, etc. The University Of Oviedo The University of Oviedo was founded towards the end of the 16th Century. The University started its courses in 1608, with less than a hundred students. Nearly four centuries later, it opens its doors to 40,000 students and over 1,000 faculty members in nine Faculties, two schools of Engineering, and eight University Schools. Housing And Meals Students typically live in shared apartments with American, Spanish or International roommates while generally preparing their own meals and doing their own laundry. Temporary accommodations will be arranged for several days while permanent housing is being located. Students pay the landlord directly. Field Trips Organized field trips are available at low cost through the International Office. Qualifications Students who have successfully completed at least two full-time semesters of college level study are eligible to apply. A minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of application is required for this program. In addition, students must also have completed the equivalent of Intermediate Spanish II prior to participation. MATURITY AND INDEPENDENCE ARE A MUST FOR THIS PROGRAM. The SUNY New Paltz Oviedo program does not have a Resident Director. SUNY New Paltz will generally arrange for a native of the area to be available to the participants during the first few weeks of the program while students locate housing and select courses, and to provide support as well as some orientation to the city and university.
