Study Abroad in Besançon, France The SUNY New Paltz program in Besançon enables students to study at one of the top language schools in France, the Center for Applied Linguistics. It is part of the "Universite de Franche-Comte".
Besançon is a "manageable" city, one that students can quickly get to know and feel at home in. The people are quite friendly and usually very appreciative of a foreign student's efforts to communicate in French. The Doubs River loops around the old part of the city, endowing it with considerable charm and character. Besançon has rich political and cultural histories which are reflected in its many places of interest and varied architectural styles. The citizens of Besançon proudly point out that their city is the birthplace of one of France's literary greats, Victor Hugo. As the cultural center of the state of Franche-Comte and the center of France's microelectronic industry, Besançon is also a modern, vibrant city. It is the home of music and film festivals. Last but not least, there are many picturesque villages in the surroundings of Besançon, as well as many opportunities for sports and hiking. Resident Director Mdme Annick Jaccard-Beugnet, a native of Besançon, is the director of the program. She has a doctorate in Sociology of Art & Culture, has taught in the SUNY New Paltz Paris summer program, and has a wealth of knowledge about French history and culture. Program Dates
Fall: late September - late December Curriculum Based on the placement exam results, students will take either 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree studies in the Cours Annuel of the Centre de Linguistique Appliquee (Cours Annuel - Descriptif Programme). Students must carry a minimum of 12 credits but may take up to 18 credits each semester. Internships Internships are available to earn academic credit as a part of the overall study abroad experience. In the past students have worked in business, communications, social sciences, and other areas. An internship offers an even deeper immersion experience that allows you to learn the global and local issues which affect Besançon. Qualifications Students who are Juniors and seniors at the time of application, with a minimum of four semesters college level French or the equivalent; and an above average academic record. The program is not limited to French majors. A minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher is required. Housing And Meals Students will reside in dorms of the University of Besançon and will receive a monthly meal allowance. Low-cost meals are available in the university cafeterias which are close to the dorms. Students usually share a room with another participant of the program. Field Trips Field trips to a number of locations are a part of the program. Past field trips have included visits to Paris, Southern France, and various places of interest in the area of Besançon.
