 Tutoring Service Questions:

How do I sign up for a tutor?

  • Registering for a tutor is easy! Students can sign up through our online system and choose to take advantage of walk-in hours or, if they would like hour-long appointments (one-time or recurring), reserve sessions in advance.

How do I cancel a tutoring appointment?

  • If you are unable to attend a tutoring session that you have reserved, please to go the same online system that you booked the session on, and confirm your cancellation.

When can I request a tutor?

  • Current SUNY New Paltz students can request tutoring all throughout the 2016 Fall semester, up until Dec. 9, 2016.

How much does tutoring cost?

  • All services provided by the Center for Student Success are absolutely free for all currently enrolled students of SUNY New Paltz!

What are the Center's business hours and where does sessions take place?

  • The Center’s offices are located in the basement of Old Main B106 and B108. The Center is open Mon: 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., Tues: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wed: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., Thurs: 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., Fri: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sun: 1 – 4 p.m.

**ADDITIONAL LOCATIONS**

  •  Coykendall Science Building (CSB) 221: sessions will take place on Mon and Tues: 5 - 8 p.m., Wed: 1 – 4:30 p.m. and 5 - 8 p.m., Sun: 1 - 4 p.m.
  • Van den Berg Hall (VH) 102: sessions will take place on Mon and Tues: 5 - 8 p.m., Wed: 1 – 4:30 p.m. and 5 - 8 p.m., Sun: 1 - 4 p.m.
  • Sojourner Truth Library (STL): Writers' Studio sessions will take place in the Create Space (Concourse level) on Tues and Weds: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Sun: 1 - 4 p.m.

What courses do you offer tutoring for?

  • Content-area support is offered for classes across the curriculum. The Center does its best to fulfill student requests as they arrive, but please be aware that the Center for Student Success may not have a peer tutor available for every course offered during the semester. What are “Appointment-based” tutoring sessions?

  • Students can sign up for one-hour small group tutoring sessions (one hour per subject/day).

What are “Walk-in” tutoring sessions?

  • Students can visit our walk-in hours (two to three hour blocks) for targeted subjects to work with our content-area tutors and peer-facilitators.

How should I prepare for a tutoring session?

Can I apply to be a tutor?

  • Absolutely! As long as you have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA and at least a B in the course that you wish to tutor, you are welcome to apply. Interested candidates can apply through our online system located HERE. If you would like more information about employment opportunities at the Center for Student Success, please CLICK HERE.

When can I apply to be a tutor?

  • Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 31, students can apply to become a peer tutor; the deadline for Fall 2016 applications for tutoring positions will be Friday, Nov. 4.

Will a tutor teach me the material I need to get a good grade?

Writers' Studio Questions:

How do I sign up for a session with a Writing Consultant?

  • Students can sign up through our online system and choose to take advantage of walk-in hours or, if they would like half hour-long appointments (one-time or recurring), reserve sessions in advance.
  • **Note: Because sessions for Writers’ Studio fill up quickly, we advise that you book a spot in advance. Please follow THIS LINK to make an appointment.**

How do I cancel an appointment with a Writing Consultant?

  • If you are unable to attend a Writers’ Studio session that you have reserved, please to go the same online system that you booked the session on, and confirm your cancellation.

How should I prepare for a Writers' Studio session?

Can I apply to be a Writing Consultant?

  • Candidates who apply to be a Writing Consultant must have at least 2.75 cumulative GPA and at least a B in a 200-level English or writing-intensive course.  Interested students can apply through our online system located HERE. Learning Strategist Questions:

Who is eligible to meet with the Learning Strategist?

  • Students who work with the Learning Strategist must have a documented disability and demonstrate academic need. For general accommodations and administrative support, please contact the Disability Resource Center.

How do I contact the Learning Strategist?

  • Danielle Yaw, the Learning Strategist, is located in Old Main B113.  yawd@newpaltz.edu

What can I expect from the first session with the Learning Strategist?

  • The first session will consist of a discussion about academic need and learning preferences. This may include inventories to determine the student's academic strengths, as well as areas the student would like to improve upon.

How often would I meet with the Learning Strategist?

  • Since students have varying needs, you and the Learning Strategist will determine the frequency of appointments throughout the semester.

How long are Learning Strategist sessions?

  • Anywhere from thirty to sixty (30 - 60) minutes, depending on the nature of the visit.

How do I prepare for a session with the Learning Strategist?

  • Please bring: syllabi, planner, assignment sheets, prompts, or any specific assignments that you would like assistance with. This is a collaborative effort, so remember, be prepared to work!
