My name is Christal Turner. I am currently a sophomore at SUNY New Paltz. I have declared a major in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics and a Minor in Black Studies. During my first year, I immediately became involved on-campus by volunteering to serve as a guide for the Admissions Open House, participating in Make a Difference Day, the Boys II Men Conference, and Relay for Life. I also joined a variety of different organizations--the Black Student Union, Emerging Leaders, Envied Fashions, Voices of Unity Gospel Choir, and the Voices of Unity Praise Dancers. During my second semester, I was selected to serve on the Executive Board as the Praise Dance Choreographer/Coordinator. As a sophomore, I continue to hold this title.
Since I want to be an Elementary teacher after I graduate, I feel fortunate to have gotten a job at the Children’s Center on-campus. I began working there my first semester and will continue working there until I graduate. Being around the children makes me envision what my future will hold.
I continue to look forward to the future, although there is no telling what it will hold. In the short term, I plan to study abroad for a semester before I graduate and to participate in student teaching during my final semester.
I joined the Scholar’s Mentorship Program because I believe that networking really helps you get ahead. Right away SMP accelerated my move into leadership positions. I have made friends with students of many cultures and some of my own cultural background. I will continue strive towards the best; and as I strive, I will never strive for the least!
Congratulations, Christal, for being selected Student of the Semester!
