Exploring the Universe

The end of spring semester 2010 is near and everyone is busy doing SCIENCE! The Exploring the Universe students are figuring out ellipses as they identify the metric side of the rulers for foci distances. Meanwhile, the STEP science and engineering students are designing a mission to Mars on a glorious Saturday morning in WSB in a competition to outdo each team’s challenge to do the most science for the least money. Additionally, even as students are cramming for exams, finishing up projects and writing those long papers, Millicent Guido is presenting her findings on teaching and learning in science at the student research symposium in the SUNY Sojourner Truth Library. Like she does not have enough to do with student teaching this semester! As expected, our science student teachers in the area schools this spring have been doing a wonderful job educating youth in the middle and high school settings.

Secondary education science ‘soon to be’ biology teacher has scored high and is presenting her research on the best practice methods for teaching and learning in the science classroom. Go Millie!

The exploring the Universe students are trying to figure out what keeps things where they are in space as the ‘gravity’ of the matter and mass are measured in distance.

I think she said two of those little pins; one for each foci? How much is 2.5 cm? Where do I find it in this thing?

The science, technology and engineering program finished up the year with workshops in STEM fields. Here they are designing a mission to Mars and trying to figure out how to stay within their allotted budget!

Decisions, decisions. If we use up too much of our funding on the rocket, we will not meet the scientific goals. We have to get rid of some weight!
