Secondary Education for Science & Math Story

Spring Fever!

02/24/2010

The spring semester brings us back to campus with mild weather and engaging discussions about teaching and learning. Secondary education students will be taking educational theory and putting it into practice as they go to area classrooms to observe classroom teachers working with students in the 7-12 setting. An eye opener for some and the expected for others, these experiences help our future teachers to identify how students learn, what classroom practices work, which practices do not work, and how to identify the difference. These experiences are designed to help them to develop their own schema of what is necessary for great teachers to become effective facilitators of education.

It's elemental Watson!!! Or is that molecular? Hands-on activities that require students to design and create their own models help them to 'see' the unseen.

Barbie bungee!!! What a way to gather graphing data! What happens when she smacks against the wall is numerically relevant.

Discussions about curriculum and teacher roles and responsibilities are serious issues for educators. Identifying and learning about these concepts as a group is rewarding and leads to better understandings.

Students in the STEP program designed to expose students to STEM fields are analyzing climate date related to climate change during one of the monthly Saturday workshops.
